National Book Festival Features J.K. Rowling?

September 27th, 2007 · 3 Comments

JK Rowling PictureDon’t I and a billion other readers wish.

The list of authors for Saturday’s Bibliophile-Rumble (a/k/a National Book Festival) is impressive, but I’m confused. Where is youth favorite Stephenie Meyer? Virginia’s own legal thriller producer John Grisham? New York Times darling Khaled Hosseini of Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns fame? Gritty and terrifying Cormac McCarthy? And why can’t we import JK Rowling? (Only slightly kidding here.) If the last remaining superpower can’t get that woman across the pond, nothing will. But I digress.

I’m sure there is some simple industry understanding about these events, but color me clueless. Anyone have a clue why other big names are not participating in the National Book Festival? How are the authors that will be present chosen?

Heck.. and why no literary at all? Or memoir? It’s all genre. The kids I understand - ’tis a family event intended to increase the national interest in reading - but it would be nice if there wre more local writers (where’s Patricia Cornwall in the mystery department?).

And why isn’t Sarah Moffett in the line up? BTW, half-way through GUM and enjoying immensely. Unlike Kelley, I will NOT bring it to the doc’s office… I’ll read in private…

Can I just say how giddy I am (or maybe that’s the wrong word - no, it’s the right word) that there’s going to be more films adapted from Cormac McCarthy’s books? No Country for Old Men is coming out in November and rights to The Road just sold!

Linda. Excellent point. Why no memoirs? Did James Frey ruin the genre for us all? As for yours truly, I can barely handle book events of 20 people. There would’ve been padded rooms for something of this size. Thanks for the nod though.

    J. Bro. “The Road” is everywhere. I wonder who they will get to play the characters?…
